EDM for hard materials and delicate contours

Through our qualified manufacturing network we offer both wire EDM and sinker EDM. We use the process especially for very hard materials, delicate contours, or geometries that are difficult or uneconomical to produce conventionally.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EDM?

EDM (electrical discharge machining) is a contactless process in which material is removed by controlled electrical discharges between the tool and workpiece. It works regardless of material hardness — the prerequisite is electrical conductivity.

What's the difference between wire and sinker EDM?

In wire EDM, a thin, continuously fed wire cuts contours through the workpiece — ideal for cut-throughs and outer/inner contours. In sinker EDM, a shaped electrode sinks into the material and reproduces its negative form — ideal for cavities, blind holes, and mold inserts.

When is EDM worthwhile instead of milling?

EDM is worthwhile for very hard or hardened materials, delicate contours, sharp internal corners, narrow slots, and geometries unreachable with rotating tools. It's often used to supplement milling or turning.

What materials can be EDM-machined?

EDM is suitable for all electrically conductive materials — especially hardened steels, hard metals, and tool steels. It's precisely with materials too hard for conventional machining that the process shows its strength.

What does EDM cost?

Cost depends on contour, material, machining time, and quantity. EDM tends to be more time-intensive than milling, but is the only option for certain geometries. Through GP-Digit, based on your drawing, you'll typically receive a binding quote within 24 hours.

How fast do I receive a quote?

Typically within 24 hours. Through our digital quoting system GP-Digit you send us your drawing data — via the request form or e-mail (info@jk-cnc-technik.de) — and receive a binding quote the next business day.

Do you manufacture in-house or through partners?

We orchestrate a network of carefully selected, highly specialized manufacturing partners in Germany and internationally. As your central procurement partner, we accompany the entire process from consulting to on-time delivery.
